Preparing London for an Ageing Population

The London Assembly is LOPSG's flagship annual event. Older Londoners can debate key issues of relevance and concern and express their views of life in the capital. It is now in its ninth year.

The Assembly took place at City Hall on 18^th July 2011 and was opened by Mayor Boris Johnson. The theme of the Assembly was "Preparing London for an Ageing Population" and the keynote speaker was Professor Alan Walker, Professor of Social Policy and Gerontology, Sheffield University.

The afternoon session of 4 workshops was addressed by a panel of experts and provided a chance for participants to engage in debates on:

• The impact of social and fiscal considerations on life expectancy
• Combating loneliness and social isolation
• Empowering and engaging older Londoners in decision making
• Increasing life expectancy and health

The Assembly  continues to be an important event in the LOPSG calendar and provides older people in this diverse metropolis an opportunity to inform policy and to influence strategies which will have an impact on the quality of their lives.
